As the present energy crunch asks for some speedy ways out, it is time to think beyond wind, solar and thermal power. All eyes are now fixed on Magnesium, which stores 10 times more energy than hydrogen. The highly reactive metal is found in abundance in seawater and can power the world for the next 300,000 years.
The purification process, which qualifies magnesium for use in energy generation, requires a lot of energy – much more than what it would get back. However, scientists are hopeful of devising solutions to compensate it somehow. Where a Canadian company is developing a fuel cell that utilizes magnesium, air and water, an Israeli researcher has invented a magnesium-based battery. So, efforts are being made to realize what appears to be a distant dream for now.
