Europe awaits the completion of its first truly ecologically responsible mosque in Cambridge. Marks Barfield, the award-winning architect who are known for their amazing work like London Eye and Kew Treetop Walkway are busy creating an oasis of calm and sustainability in an urban jungle these days. The project that started back in 2008 with purchase of a strip of land and an old warehouse is an attempt to encourage Muslims across the globe to take up their environmental responsibilities.
Keeping this £13 million mosque’s carbon footprints to nearly zero will be green features like the latest heat pumps, conservation technology and green roofs. The well-insulated structure will use stunning skylights to keep the interiors lit naturally. Comprising of a cafe, a teaching area and meeting rooms for use by the local Muslim and non-Muslim communities, the eco-mosque has the capacity to accommodate up to 1,000 people. Giving fresh and clean air to breath will be the beautiful trees surrounding the building. The new mosque will act both like a spiritual center and like a leisure destination.
