Lasserre’s anatomical sculptures are an absolutely awesome and unique pieces of craft that reveal an anatomical figure of either a human or animal form in a very regular object- say a bed knob! Hence, the artist is producing art in a used object and transforming the meaning of it altogether!
Maskull Lasserre is an artist from Canada who presently has two studios in Ottawa and Montreal. Lasserre’s work comprises of sculptures and drawings in which he portrays various surprise elements in regular backdrops – inciting excitement and awe. Lasserre’s anatomical sculptures range from humorous and allegorical to the macabre – truly ingenious sculptures made using old objects.
The snake skeleton in the lower half of an old axe titled ‘Secret Carpentry’ is perhaps one of the most intricately carved sculptures out of the whole range – as he has vividly carved all the details of the reptile’s vertebrae in wood. The other anatomical sculpture is the metallic (made from reclaimed metal) crocodile that is eating into a wooden table is a remarkable allegorical piece for the brand ‘Lacoste’. Another interesting one is the old empty wooden frame that has a set of teeth carved in one corner – giving the frame a very scary edge!
Lasserre has exhibited his works in Canada and in the US. His works are no only innovative and surprising, but make use of old objects as the basic raw material for his sculptural creations.
