The Museum of Science and Industry’s Smart Home, a fully functioning, eco-friendly home, is said to be the greenest home in Chicago. Celebrating its third year of existence, the 2,500 square foot demo residence will be transformed for 2010 by Midwest Living. It will be redesigned to reflect the lifestyle of a couple looking to minimize home maintenance, maximize efficiency and settle in to a dwelling that not only meets up with aesthetics but also functionality.

The home already features the latest green technology like a large reservoir tank underneath to trap rainwater that can be re-used, solar panels on the roof and a large wind turbine in the front yard. The clean energy generated powers the home, while the surplus is funneled back into the museum. The new design features soft, organic textures and colors fused with a contemporary style.

The transformation that the house got emphasizes on converting everything into green. Throughout the home eco-friendly gadgets like a video baby monitor, an iPod dock in the lobby that can play music throughout the home and a kitchen counter top that can boil a pan of water without heat can be seen. The desk in the office is made out of recycled paper, while the trashcan is made from old newspapers. The green home will stand as an example to all those who want their home, and life, to be smarter, more efficient and more in tune with the environment.
