Scott Comey, Michel Marcellot, Victor Allienello and others are quite a bunch of energy innovators from the New England region (Rhode Island and Southeastern Massachusetts) that are doing a great job of devising alternatives to oil imports. Comey, the chief organizer of the Energy Innovation Group, is conducting experiments with a unique solar-powered greenhouse for biodiesel production from vegetable oil. Later, he intends to use this greenhouse as a growing environment for algae as a fuel source, only if he could procure the necessary finances for microscope and centrifuge eventually.
Solar-powered greenhouse:
Last November, Comey started growing a tray full of cyclotella cryptica, through his solar greenhouse that requires no conventional fuel. Providence inventor Paul Klinkman created this prototype greenhouse that features a solid roof and insulated walls. Large panels of mirrored glass have been used to capture the sun’s energy. Klinkman hopes to sell each greenhouse at $2,000 to $3,000.
Other innovators:
Michel Marcellot, the owner of Seven Arrows Herb Farm, is another innovator who filters cooking oil from area restaurants and mixes it with chemicals to produce biodiesel. He has modified one commercial-sized greenhouse heater to run on 100 percent biodiesel. Another group member, Victor Allienello, is providing the essential technical expertise regarding oil-refining operation to Marcellot.
