The Costwolds will soon see a new motorway service station that will flaunt its green design. Located in the area of outstanding natural beauty, the structure will stand between junctions 11 and 12 of the M5. To obtain a green design, the developers organized a competition that was won by Glenn Howells. The design very beautifully blends the petrol station into the landscape, so that it is not visible from the road.
The new motorway service station is being described as “a rural oasis” with farm shops where homemade food, fresh vegetables and organic meat will be sold. Locally produced art and crafts will also be put for sale and the profits earned from it will go back into the local community. The service station will have beautiful timber-clad interiors with curvy chairs, low coffee tables and subtle lighting. The developers have decided to use locally sourced Douglas fir as the building material, whereas a kitchen garden and the creation of habitats for wildlife will also bring down the carbon emissions. They developers claim that it will emit a fifth of the carbon dioxide of normal motorway services.
