Nuum: A self-watering therapeutic planter by Lavinia Chu

Nuum self watering planter
Nuum, designed by Lavinia Chu, is a simple self watering planter that delivers water to the plants by using capillary action. Nuum has been designed as a part of horticultural therapy wherein the patient achieves physical/ emotional healing by way of gardening and interacting with plants as it is believed that nature helps us to heal.

We have to learn to adopt good practices for horticulture and gardening. ‘Nuum’ meaning ‘new and bloom’, helps people to explore how they can restore naturally, giving them a new perspective and helping their lives to bloom like a plant.

The research shows that healing can be fast if the patients get involved in restoration techniques through growing plants. This means that we should care for our plants as much as we care for ourselves. Caring for plants and our surroundings will reflect the good results in the community we live in including our society. This is how we should spread awareness to care for the valuable resources and making the most of them.

The entire concept of Nuum is very organic and green. The raw materials required for the making of Nuum are natural things such as bamboo, cedar, ceramic and clay pot which are all biodegradable and have great qualities for the healthy growth of a plant.

Over-watering is one reason that leads to the tilting of plants and also to a gross wastage of water. Nuum addresses this very issue. The self-watering Nuum is the very solution as many of us are ignorant of exactly how much water a certain plant requires. More often, we end up over-watering in the hope of hydrating them.

Nuum contains a water reservoir that is acted upon with capillary action by the plants. The reservoir can then be refilled as per the the mark on the water level indicator. Nuum is truly a great way to to save water and at the same time receive great emotional healing!
