Open-air pavilions have always been an object of pleasure. They always sprinkle brilliance no matter what size they come in. But you will be surprised to know that open-air pavilions have gone mobile. Yes! You read it right. Expocamacal 2010 in Medellín, Colombia is the site where a mobile open-air pavilion was erected by the Plan B Arquitectos christened as the Pabellon Desconectados. This temporary pavilion was crafted using materials that were donated by the companies who were part of the fair.
Each company donated panels that had similar dimensions with different designs and colors. The façade of the pavilion was fixed with these panels at different areas which made it look extraordinarily diverse. This resulted in a building that was luminous and twinkled like a box full of precious jewels which were in actuality sustainable bits and pieces. When the interior is illuminated, the lights shine out of the panels making the face of this pavilion sparkle, while each cube extends a different effect. When the sun shines outside, beautiful yet colorful shadows are formed inside.
The floor plan that was flexible and open made the open pavilion worthy to be used for various actions like product launches, meeting, parties, promotions, etc. Highlight of the pavilion being that it came with the power to be moved from one spot to the other even during the show, thanks to its supple floor. Cooling systems take a backseat as the open spaces let cool breezes come into the pavilion through its façade. This will help cut global warming by keeping a check on energy consumption and is a step ahead in befriending nature.
The main reason behind the movable nature of the pavilion was the idea of donation tagged with it. Pabellon Desconectados was easy on the set up graph and could be snapped apart without much difficulty as well. After the whole structure was brought down, the pavilion was designed in manner so that it could be donated to a community or adjoining neighborhood.
The mobile open-air pavilion has been given a beautiful shape out of donated materials and the end result will also end in a donation. Wow! How thoughtful and a great way of protecting the environment by making good use of things rather than discarding them.
