When asked about how we would save our precious “Mother Nature,” the one answer that is everyone’s favorite is “by planting trees.” But, how many of us seriously make an effort to plant even a single sapling? Not many. Well, in an era where people don’t have time for a noble cause like tree plantation, it is overwhelming to see a man plant 20,101 tree saplings singlehandedly. Muhammed Yousuf Jamil, a Lance Naik (Lance Corporal) in the Pakistani Army, has set a new Guinness World Record by planting the 20,101 tree saplings in just 18 hours and 40 minutes.
Earlier this week, the environmentalist started planting the saplings at 2pm on a 12-acre site in the city of Gujranwala. Planting at a speed of over 18 trees a minute, Jamil broke Ken Chaplin’s record of planting 15,170 trees. He could have defeated the previous record maker by additional 400 saplings, but the monitoring officials disqualified then saplings on the grounds of poor planting. Jamil received a nearly $7000 prize along with a promotion by his commander for his green initiative. This is not the first time that such an effort has come from Pakistan, in 2009 a Pakistani team of 300 set another variation of the tree planting world record by planting 541,176 trees in 24 hours at a site along the Indus River.
