We at Greendiary have introduced you to many skyscrapers in the past, where some boosted their unparallel beauty, the others exhibited their extraordinary design and sustainable features. This time around, I bring to you a skyscraper that could be tagged as the world’s greenest skyscraper. The “zero energy” Pearl River Tower erected at the in Guangzhou, China is designed the architectural firm Skidmore, Owings and Merrill. The structure makes use of the best sustainable technology, passive wind and solar design, and innovative structural techniques in order to get a near zero energy tag.
The ‘zero-energy’ concept Pearl River Tower is designed to take advantage of the sun and wind patterns of the location. It has wind turbines installed in its interiors that receives the wind from the funnel style breaks in the façade. The solar panels in combination with the wind turbines power the heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems. The façade of the structure also features motorized louvers hat rotate to keep the building cool and provide fresh air ventilation.
CNTC Guangdong Tobacco Corporation, the company behind the 71 story sustainable building has recently finished construction of the top floor. The structure also flaunts green features like double-skinned, triple-glazed facade to the cooling beam structure and greywater collection system. The company claims that Pearl River Tower will be fully loaded with eco-friendly features later this year.
