Brett Graham, one of New Zealand’s most accomplished sculptors, uses his ability to abstract complex historical and cultural ideas to create strong and beautiful sculptures. As part of the 17th Biennale of Sydney, Graham brings his ground-breaking collection “Weapons of Mass Destruction,” which includes weapon sculptures mainly made from MDF, steel and recycled rubber tires.
His western weapons of mass destruction go by the names Te Hokioi, Rukuhia and Mihaia. The Te Hokioi is a stealth bomber, the Rukuhia is a Russian tank, while the Mihaia is a near full-scale Russian BRDM-2 scout car. His WMD versions are decorated with beautiful patterns based on traditional designs. The stunning sculptures are Graham’s attempt to blend beauty with danger.
