Imagine a smart phone that asks you to rotate a brass dial to make a call. A smart phone with all new modern features covered within a steampunk exterior is simply confusing. However, designer Richard Clarkson has developed a Rotary Smartphone for settling the Digital vs. Mechanical dispute.
The phone comes with two brass dials: a complete rotary dial from the traditional era and the other, a modern button dial. Both can be interchanged at any point of time. The technique to change the dials is same as changing the lenses of the camera. If you have used a camera and changed the lenses, then you can operate it familiarly. The electroplated copper and four coats of paint layers complete the interesting construction of the piece.
The brass dial reflects on the back panel while the front panel is a display for contents and contacts. The design specially made for steam punk and minimalistic fans is quite satisfactory.
I have looked at where industrial design has come from, and where it might be going to, and by doing so have tried to create an object that is true to both, a harmonious combination of mechanical parts and digital technologies. Rotary mechanical is a question not only about the ever increasing âdigital take-overâ of everything in our lives but also what is lost when this happens.â He believes that the design is the reflection of an individualâs personality as opposed to generic mobile handsets, which provide little originality.
If you remember the old days, all used to have a big old-fashioned rotary phone. The dialer was the only way to make a call. Moreover, when the rotary phone dialed everyone could hear the sound. As the time passed, the technologies changed, use of new phones started. Then the market flooded with touch screens with similar kind of sleek edges, big screen, and lightweight body. Here, the designer made a difference and created a phone with simplistic design and industrial features. However, if you miss that traditional phone, but do not want to leave you touch screen, this is the product for you.
You can use the cool dialer to call someone. If you do not want to use the dialer, then there is an option of the push buttons as well. Just change the dialer and its ready. Whatever you use depends on you, but you will definitely admire the design.
