Choosing the compact fluorescent (CLF) bulbs over the inefficient incandescent bulbs is what most of the eco-conscious are seen doing. The CLF bulbs are thought to be the ultimate green alternative due to their low energy consumption, but are you aware of the hazardous chemicals that they contain. With funding from the Department of Energy, RTI International is here with a solution.
RTI has developed a new range of light bulbs that are more efficient than regular lights and are more environmentally friendly than conventional CFLs. The nanofiber bulbs are based on nanofibers that themselves have diameters smaller than a human hair, and emit warm, white light when in contact with an electric current. A combination of nanofiber-based reflectors and photoluminescent nanofibers has resulted in these eco-friendly bulbs. The nanofiber lights put out 55 lumens of light per watt, making them five times more efficient than a traditional light bulb. The company expects the nanofiber technology to hit the market in another three to five years.
