After the success of a free demonstration of her sculpture at a public park in Santa Fe, Santa Fe artist Robin Gay Wakeland is all set to give a slide show and lecture at a conference on June 28 to June 30, 2010 in Pisa, Italy. During the conference, images of her fabric and plexiglas/mixed media sculpture constructed for the purpose of measuring particulate air pollution will be put on display. In addition, she will discuss how 2D and 3D art by using 20th-21st century educational methods and theory can help in teaching English language development.
Last month in Santa Fe, New Mexico USA, as many as 30 children and their parents participated in her free demonstration to learn about particle air pollution and how it accumulates over time on fabric and architectural surfaces as a grey or black grunge. The artist also encouraged children to assemble found and recycled objects like laundry detergent bottles, lampshade frames, and thrift store fabric provided to them into sculpture. She hopes that her initiatives will influence public and private collector art policy to use recycled materials, to consider artwork’s carbon footprint.
