Nowadays, many people prefer ‘Do it Yourself’ (DIY) activities and save lot of money and hassles rather then depending on professional help. One such project worth mentioning is the renovation of the Banningham Bowls clubhouse. Two interesting features of this DIY activity is that firstly it was not just a unit but the whole of the clubhouse renovated with the creative use of recycled materials and secondly, this was carried by a group of old citizens who were in their 70s and 80s. These people were keen to renovate their clubhouse but were dejected by lack of enough funds. Hence they paved the way to take this arduous task in their own hands and depend on less or cheap materials but achieve their goal nonetheless.
This group of young minded old aged people got the idea when they calculated the estimated cost of a trendy and modern renovation as £15,000 which was far greater than what they had in their kitty, that is, £2,000, provided by legacy of Bryan Hall who was a resident of the village.
The group also considered about a large garden shed but that was also pretty expensive at £8,000 and there was no source of getting extra money. After giving it a thought, the group led by their leader, an 83 years old person called Alan Rowlands, proposed to do it by themselves with the help of recycled material borrowed from family and friends. The idea clicked among the bowlers and they decided to give it a shot and set an example that brain and creativity never gets old.
The group gathered recycled and reclaimed materials from their friends and family, like pallets from the group leader’s son’s house and front windows from his daughter’s house. Somebody gifted a door while somebody else donated kitchen units and roof tiles.
The players created the club house’s frame in six foot sections and then lifted them over the hedge. After seeing the zest of the creation among these enthusiastic old people, some young people extended a helping hand and contributed in building the clubhouse.
Recently the club was reopened with a barbecue party for the group of 23 members of the club to rejoice in their own creation and hard work.
