Seven full-scale humpback whales to devour Kapiti Coast

whale song sculpture

In a couple of years, you will see a life-size sculpture – featuring seven whales – adding a distinctive grace to the Kapiti Coast. The $3.5 million sculpture proposed by artist Mike Fuller and design consultant Gavin Bradley will be made from recycled alloy coated in bronze. Hoped to be the New Zealand’s largest sculpture, it will employ Fibreglass moulds used for casting. This will lend transparency to the sculpture.

Jenny Rowan, Kapiti Mayor, says:

The reaction from local and national politicians, tourism industry experts and some key business operators is overwhelmingly enthusiastic.

He has extended a $70,000 aid to the project. Paekakariki, Paraparaumu and the banks of Otaki River are some of the proposed sites. Here, the whales would sing through some wind-powered harps and spout water at the addressees.
