Shenzhen the fastest growing city in China will soon get its own Manhattan. James Corner Fields Operations has won a project to build a new urban center called the Qianhai in the Pearl River Delta mega-region, linking Hong Kong to Shenzhen and Guangzhou. The proposal visualizes the site over 4,500 acres of reclaimed land as a dense, compact, sustainable urban typology around water which is the area’s most important resource. Designed to house 1.5 million inhabitants the “Water City” has been divided into five manageable sub districts, all built along the already existing water channels and rivers. Called the five fingers, the sub districts provide a vital hydrological infrastructure for remediating storm water in the area which receives very heavy rainfall. The ecologically sensitive design offers iconic waterfront, diverse building stock, cultural and recreational features to compete with major destination waterfront cities around the world.
