With the level of carbon emissions going up every year, it is but imperative that researchers should come out with viable solutions to fix them. We have seen undersea geological formations engulfing some of these emissions, which we know as carbon capture and storage. By the way, have you ever thought about converting flue gases into baking soda? A Texas-based company Skyonic aims to bring it about at the SkyMine Project, located in San Antonio.
Skyonic will mix flue gases from burning coal with water, and later, after heating it, pass the mixture through a filter that separates hydrogen and chlorine gas. Since the process also involves carbonization of sodium hydroxide, sodium bicarbonate surfaces as the product. Utilizing 75,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide, the project will produce 143,000 metric tons of baking soda. Quite markedly, the Department of Energy has awarded the company with $3 million in research funding.
