A huge LED display that doubles as a solar shield is all set to turn heads at its unveiling in the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum this Friday. Dubbed the SolPix, a combined media-wall/solar blind will brighten up the opening of the museum’s Design Triennial. Simone Giostra & Partners Architects have brought façade architecture’s two biggest trends the solar shielding and media walls under one innovative design.

The SolPix behaves like a set of heavy-duty blinds that completely depends on sun’s power to move. The blinds incorporate LEDs and PV array that capture solar energy and utilize it to create the media façade. Apart from this, the system also keeps a track on its own performance and displays it in motion graphics that play across the façade. The architects claim that SolPix is their largest working prototype till date.
