Thinking beyond automobiles, Toyota Tsusho Corporation is now planning to try its hands on stuff that fuels them. The parent company of Toyota Motor Corporation is going to invest in the cultivation of jatropha, a feedstock that it hopes to refine into biodiesel. Before getting into a large-scale development of biodiesel, the company is looking forward to improving the amount of oil that jatropha can yield.
Jatropha can easily grow in nutrient-poor soil, which means it doesn’t struggle for land that can be used for food production. Hence, it is believed to be a promising feedstock. Toyota is not the first company to see great potential in jatropha as a source of biofuels. Valero has already turned to jatropha-based biodiesel.
