Fashion designing has been thought to be synonymous with superficiality and the lack of concern for for our environment. However, the Trashion Show held by the El Paso Community College (EPCC) designing students this year on Earth Day decided to give it a ‘green’ uplift by coverting trash into fashion. This very innovative idea does not only involve fashion per se, but it also shows the responsibilty of the fashion industry towards the environment. Through this Trashion Show, the students wanted to spread awareness about recycling and using our resouces wisely and not merely abusing them. The Trashion Show showcased design talent and put forth a display of the most amazing outfits put together by all things that were trash-worthy and by infusing new life into them, the designers have created affordable and ‘green’ fashion statements.
Five gifted designing students from the fashion promotion class showcased their pieces of apparel crafted out of recycled materials. A lot of recycled clothes was shown by models sporting wearable and fashionable attires made out of paper, foam, aluminum, plastic etc. Tomasa King, a designer showcased a trendy cocktail dress that was put together using more than 200 Capri Sun bottom halves. Not only is the Trashion Show an attempt towards spreading the message of reusing and recycling, but it is also a challenging activity that enables the students to work at their creative best. Another designer called Estrada made a dress comprising of 100 20 liter Coke bottles and it took her well over a year to accumulate them. The Trashion Show is truly a great way to celebrate fashion with a strong environmental message!
