The University of Alabama Gorgas Library’s first floor is getting a green makeover these days. The new space that will be called the Gorgas Library Learning Commons will part with the stacks of reference books, the high stools at computer terminals and the dark paint and lighting and attract students and faculty with its brighter colors, better lighting.

The first floor closed in December for renovation and will not reopen until its all set to exhibit the new look in February. The northern entrance to the library, known as the Capstone entrance will remain closed except for deliveries and people with disabilities. To accommodate more seating and working capacity, UA Libraries moved the reference collection from the first floor to the second in the space formerly occupied by current periodicals.

The library will use co-friendly ‘green’ furniture produced using sustainable practices. More advanced computer equipment with larger screens and more electrical sockets to plug in laptops, computer and even iPhones have been inserted. Java City, the coffee bar, will get new sustainable furniture to give students and faculty a perfect environment to work together.
