Keeping the spirit of Earth Day high, the U.S. Navy too contributed in its own special way. The Navy conducted a test fight using the camelina-based biofuel. The U.S. Navy owned F/A-18 Super Hornet took off at the Naval Air Warfare Center in Patuxent River, Maryland, encouraging the worlds to switch to sustainable alternatives. The war bird flew at more than the speed of sound using a 50-50 mix of biodiesel and conventional petroleum-based jet fuel.

The camelina-based biofuel supported test fight that was first of its kind for the navy has proved to be a milestone in the ultimate operational use of biofuels in military aircraft. Sustainable Oils, the Montana-based maker of the camealina biodiesel provided the green fuel to the Navy. The alternative fuels test program depicts Navy’s commitment towards safeguarding our environment.
