Vehicles exhibiting African visual culture on contemporary art

global africa project 1

The Global Africa Project, an extraordinary exhibition exploring the broad spectrum of contemporary African art, design and craft worldwide, premiered at the Museum of Arts and Design on November 17, 2010. The exhibition featured the work of more than 100 talented artists from across the world. Here something I get from the show that all you eco-conscious auto fanatics and art enthusiasts will love. Displayed in the lobby of the MAD is one of BMW’s famed Art Cars, a 1991 BMW 525i sporting bright colors and bold forms of the Ndebele houses.

Designed by a South African artist Esther Mahlangu, the BMW flaunts amazing artwork that is a little formal but very majestic. This cute little Volkswagen Beetle toy featured in the picture above is the work of a Zimbabwe-based artist. The two-foot-long toy is shaped from recycled material like tin cans. Placing Coca-Cola labels on the roof, doors and bonnet, the artist displayed a lot of creativity. The hood’s latch, the wire door handles and the plastic headlights harmonize well with the turning wheels.

Another artist, Meschac Gaba, displayed car-inspired pieces that made many heads turn with the headdresses made of braided artificial hair. The headdresses evoke school buses, tanks and luxury sedans.
