Last year we at GreenDiary shared with you the news of the Wave Hub Project receiving the go-ahead from the South West RDA, now the same groundbreaking renewable energy project has succeed in completing the installation of a giant socket on the seabed off Britain. This world’s biggest wave energy site is about to go live and promises to generate 20 megawatts as the initial maximum capacity, further scalable to 50 megawatts.
The $64 million project off the coast of Cornwall allows the developers to test and work with four different technologies at any one time. It consists of a sub-station at Hayle in Cornwall, from which a cable has been taken through a 200m duct beneath the sand dunes and across the seabed to the wave generation area, where the energy generators will be moored.
The US company Ocean Power Technologies Limited is the first wave generator developer to be signed up for the scheme. The other companies that are seeking involvement in the project are WestWave, Fred Olsen Limited and Oceanlinx. Not only will the Wave Hub Project bring a revolution into the renewable energy industry, but will also create hundreds of quality jobs in the region.
