Given the day and age we live in, it is obvious that we would see a lot of innovation and new technology coming in to further make our living easier. But could anyone imagine a Wi-Fi connected lightbulb? Sounds a little weird, doesn’t it? Well it is true. A semiconductor company in Netherlands, called NXP has claimed to have created the Greenchip technology which would be in many Wi-Fi connected lightbulbs. The bulbs have certain “green” values attached to them as well. These lightbulbs consumes a much lower amount of electricity which makes them eco-friendly. These lightbulbs will consume less energy because they are not standard lightbulbs but are compact fluorescent and LED bulbs which need much lesser energy than standard bulbs.
The purpose of creating such bulbs is to save power. But according to Jim Lindop, NXP’s General Manager for low power RF, these “smart” lightbubs takes the concept of smart systems to a different level altogether. So what would these “web” connected lights do for you? Well, from now on you can control the light settings with a remote control or with your iPad. You could even incorporate motion sensors in them so that they would automatically light up if you need them to be. It could also save you a few bucks in terms of your power bill. The lights could also be connected to your burglar alarm where and the lights would cycle giving an impression that someone is in home when there is none.
These smart lightbulbs of the future uses 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi signals over a 802.15.4 short range wireless protocol. They also use the new Ipv6 protocol so that you won’t have to worry about your bulbs eating up your bandwidth. The lightbulbs are slated to be available in the market as soon as early 2012 at a cost of around $50 or so for a set of five bulbs and a remote control.
