Wooden Green Man sculpture greets visitors to Golden Valley

A mature beech tree at the Wick Golden Valley Nature Reserve – fated to be chopped down eventually – transcends to artistic stature, thanks to the perceptive artistry of Andy O’Neill. The symbolical piece of art ‘The Green Man’ now welcomes people to the nature reserve. O’Neill gathered tremendous support from students at Wick Primary School, who, for ten days, helped him complete his project.

The wooden sculpture done on a six-meter trunk features a fish, an otter, a kingfisher and bats flitting around the green man’s face. Defra’s Aggregates Levy Sustainability Fund came up with the needed finances for the project.
