Re’cycle’ing at its best if we may call it that way! Here is the result of creative thinking, hard work and a passion for living green. The wooden bicycle by designer Samuel Severns shows that nothing can come in the way of a determined designer. He single-handedly sculpted a bicycle from wood and has made it road-worthy too!
It all happened by ‘accident’! An unfortunate crash mangled up the body of a bicycle. Instead of sending it over to the scrap, the mangled remains were taken and then modified and re-designed into a beautiful looking bike.
Birch wood was used to fabricate those parts of the frame that had been bent and were totally unusable. Thankfully, the rims and spokes of the tires were intact and they could be used as they were. Birch wood is durable and high quality, but not lightweight by any means. Thus, the bike has some weight and this only adds to its riding stability.
A CNC router was made for the bike by using plywood that was free of formaldehyde. It was laminated into a 2.5 feet x 5 feet block to serve as a CNC router. The finishing was done completely by hand using polish and materials that are non-toxic. The result is simply elegant and beautiful to look at.
The best part is that the wood has been daintily bent and reshaped to obtain all the original curves of the bicycle. A dark brown seat goes along with the color schema and completes the ‘green’ bike!
