Scientists from the University of Pennsylvania have created the world’s first self-powered circuit that runs on solar power. Presently, researchers are producing a nominal amount of electricity from the circuits. Still, it has formed the basis upon which they can, in near future, run a variety of applications including touchscreen technology and modeling of the human brain on artificial neural networks.
After increasing the number of photovoltaic circuits on a glass side, the power output could be amplified. As of now, it is only about 10 percent. Well, to boost the power output, the 2D circuits can be replaced with 3D structures. However, dreaming of replacing its silicon equivalents will continue to be a dream after all.
The photovoltaic circuits use light to gather data corresponding to a certain wavelength. Later, each color of light transcribes into a different neurotransmitter for modeling the human nervous system. Other applications include ‘powering tiny robotic devices or running computer calculations at the speed of light.’
