Elpida Memory, Inc., a leading manufacturer of dynamic random access memory integrated circuits has developed a 30nm process 2-gigabit DDR3 SDRAM, which – they claim – is the world’s thinnest and most energy efficient chip in its range. Elpida’s new synchronous dynamic random access memory chip surpasses Samsung’s thin-circuit chips in thinness.
The new chip consumes 10-15 percent less electricity than the Elpida’s most energy-efficient SDRAM chip this far. Since the chips flaunt a thinner circuit pattern, it improves the chips’ data transfer speeds hugely.
Elpida’s SDRAM technology will enable the company to attain 45 percent more chip yield per silicon wafer than what it presently do, once it starts mass-manufacturing the new chip this December in its factory in Higashihiroshima. Moreover, the company could cut SDRAM chip production costs by 30 percent.
