With an eye to outshine gasoline-powered mopeds market in Asia, Japan’s Yamaha Motor has introduced a zero-emission electric scooter EC-03 that can travel 26.6 miles on a single six-hour charge from a household power outlet. Sanyo Electric has developed a 50V lithium-ion battery for the e-moped. The electric scooter also features has a lightweight aluminum alloy frame.
A Yamaha spokesperson says…
It emits no carbon dioxide and can be stored away inside the house as it would leak no gasoline.
Yamaha assumes that the annual demand for electric motorcycles in Asian markets will balloon to 300,000 to 500,000 units by the mid-2010s. Accordingly, it hopes to release the EC-03 in Tokyo on September 1 this year. After a month or so, the moped will be available to the Japanese customers with a price tag of $2800. Later, in 2011, Yamaha will start exporting it to Taiwan, Europe and China.
