The State Energy Conservation Office (SECO) believes that the aforementioned fund awarded to the City of Houston will help it to brave emergencies like hurricanes more effectively than ever before. The city will purchase 25 commercially available distributed renewable energy (solar) mobile generator systems to ensure backup energy and an constant power supply during an emergency. So, the Houston-residents won’t ever be out of power.

The City of Houston is committed to achieving a sustainable solar-powered infrastructure. Hurricane Ike’s two-week power outage sent a clear message about the need for alternative technologies to help us get through a similar situation in the future. These generators are scheduled to be operational by the 2011 hurricane season.
During an emergency, the power generated by these mobile solar-powered systems could sufficiently power wheelchair batteries, gas pumps for emergency vehicles, small-scale water treatment, and emergency communications systems; it can also charge oxygen concentration pumps, refrigerate medicines and power critical city facilities. Otherwise, they will help sustain the city fire stations.
