Slow Up-rising: Residential bridge merges habitat and infrastructure

Until now, bridges have been sheer connectors built to span a valley, road, body of water for the purpose of providing passage over the obstacle, but what if I say you could soon be living in them. Studio Ja has come with an idea of a residential bridge called “Slow Up-rising” for the international ideas competition Solar Park South, in Calabria, Italy. The competition requested designs for a ‘Solar Highway’ by re-using Salerno-Reggio Calabria highway sections between Scilla and Bagnara.

The new proposal suggests the top of the by-passing highway to the bottom of the valley. The bridge will be revamped with green infrastructure and habitat. There are plans for many housing structure that not only lets the bridge be used for travelling, but also for living. The structure will behave like an eco-park that both generates clean energy and provides fast by-passing connections. It’s interesting to see designers changing the face of bridges.
