Designed by Tom Kundig of Seattle studio Olson Kundig Architects, the T Bailey Offices in Anacortes, Washington, wholly incorporate the client’s product as architectural elements into its office space. The product used for this extension to a steel pipe factory is a gigantic pipe used in wind turbine towers. In order to reach the main office space, visitors have to walk through a massive 14-foot pipe and up into another 22-foot diameter pipe.
The vertical pipe in this 11,700 square foot office includes solar-powered skylight and large fan that helps in ventilation of the main office floor. The stairway pipe sucks the warm air from the office space and then evacuates out of the structure, reducing the cooling load considerably. The T Bailey Offices sport a slanting roof that directs runoff into a rain garden and adjoining landscape. The structure flaunts its raw aesthetic and reduced utilization toxic materials and coatings, thanks to the incorporation of unfinished materials like concrete floors, unfinished steel, and an exposed structure.
