Aman Setu School in Pune, India teaches eco-friendliness in a unique way

Eco School

Environment conservation is not any single person’s responsibility but the duty of every human on this Earth. At a time when environmental degradation is showing its results, every little move by human is priceless. And when someone goes ahead and creates a whole eco-friendly atmosphere in an educational institution, there is much more than mere appreciation the person deserves. Many kudos to Madhavi Kapur for just doing the same. Aman Setu School in Pune, a city 190km away from Mumbai, is an unique concept of schooling where anything and everything is environment friendly. Made with recycled materials, this school claims to be green in every aspects. Where India is considered one of the least eco-friendly nations, a school like this falsifies the notion.

Made with disposed sand and cement bags left over at construction sites, the school has handful of buildings. The shapes of buildings are either conical or rectangular. Old advertising hoardings are used for the construction of roofs and for ventilation old and used pipes have been installed. The coloring of the walls is exclusive. No paints were used. Instead, cow dung along with water and mud were mixed together to paint the walls. As a matter of fact, the use of cow dung also keeps the rooms free from any insects or germs. Surprisingly though, the rooms don’t stink and on the contrary smells pleasant. Amazing !!!

There is no electricity in the whole campus. Big doors and windows cut roughly allow ample light to enter into the rooms. And the outside trees offer constant breeze. There is a big door for entry and exit of adults but for kids they have a small door called rabbit hole which helps the kids to get in out of the room in a more amateurish way. Needless to say, the kids just love it. They walk barefoot in and around the campus. Allowed to leave the class if bored, the teachers encourage their students to take a stroll in the green grass, play with the tires and pamper the fishes in the school pond. Once done with a beautiful journey with nature, get back fresh in the class.

An unique concept in true sense, Aman Setu School leaves you spellbound at the end. Where education has been commercialized with air conditioner classrooms, this all new earthy and green campus promises to take environmental awareness to a new high.
