Have you ever wondered how do animals live especially the insects like wasps and cicada who build their own nests? How it feels to be inside their shelters? If you want to see their abodes from inside and the possible human life in similar structures than there is something interesting for you. From the beginning of 2012, Nat Geo Wild Cable will be airing a serial called ‘Live Like an Animal’. Recently an episode was shot for the same where the host of the show and two more people made a replica of wasp’s nest to live in the same for three consecutive days.
Matty Thompson, the host of the show along with two other people constructed a wasp’s nest near the American Museum of Natural History. The wasp mixes his saliva with food particles to make its nest but since it was impossible for the three animal architectures, they used cardboard for the purpose. The dome shaped structure is actually a replica of a bald faced hornet, a social wasp that is quite common across North America and Mexico. In this man made nest many hexagon cells are also constructed with the help of metal and other construction material. In a real nest, these cells are used for laying eggs and development of baby wasps whereas in the replica, the cells were filled up with white balloons to give it a realistic feeling. A wasp makes its nest from upside down and hence the outermost layer of the nest built for the show was built from upside down. The task was tough but the team was enthusiastic about it and finished the project in five days.
The team has built a beaver’s lodge also as part of the show earlier. Hope the new series will take us to the unchartered realms of animal kingdom through its fantastic replicas and gutsy hosts who will manage to live in the typical places for a couple of days on a stretch.
