Butter sculptures turn heads at Ohio State Fair

Ohio State Fair's Butter Sculpture

The much awaited Ohio State Fair is about to start and people are eagerly waiting to look at the butter sculptures made this year. The history of the making of these butter sculptures dates back to 1900 century, almost at the same time when the Ohio State Fair had started gaining grounds in the local community. This time the fair is commemorating space shuttle’s 30 years stint in the universe. Out of three butter sculptures, one is dedicated to the astronauts.

The fair is being organized on the state fairgrounds and in the Dairy building, the sculpture of the astronaut was unveiled. The astronaut sculpture is not dedicated to one particular astronaut and rather is dedicated to all the astronauts who have made Ohio proud and hence the astronaut sculpture is not of any specific person. The astronaut is eating dried ice – cream at a shuttle control panel. The sculpture is a homage to all those 19 astronauts from Ohio who went on Space shuttle mission.

Next to the astronaut’s sculpture is the sculpture of a Holestein cow and its calf. The cow is seen every year at the fair. The sculptures are kept in a 45 degree glass case to preserve them all through the ten days fair. These figures have been created by three Cincinnati artists — Bob Kling, Alex Balz and Paul Brooke.

The state fair is a ten days event which started on 27 July and will run till 7 August. So if you want to see the fair you can go any time during these 10 days but if you want to taste the sculpture butter then go directly on 7 August when the fair comes to an end and the sculpture is taken out from temperature controlled glass case.
