Seven creative reuses of old plastic bags

Imagine a world completely free of the plastic garbage dump at the corners of the streets. The streets and localities would look cleaner and free of dirt in the air. There can be something done in order to make this happen. One of the best answers would be recycling. Today’s young generation has more creativity and imaginative power than before. Hence, this encourages and helps the world to change and make a difference through recycling. Imagination and creativity put into the recyclable things can bring a revolution.

Recycled plastic totes

The totes can be woven from recycled plastic bags. This idea came into the mind of Clements, a noted designer who got this idea after seeing conditions of the Giota Garbage Slum in Kenya. He was then supported primarily by Fashion. Looking at the condition of living of the people in slums, Clements came up with an idea of providing income to the women by giving them employment and making them sell their handiwork. This accomplished both of the targets, one, unemployment and the other reduction of amount of garbage. These bags made out of the raw material and recyclable material can be sold in several designs and prints. They are priced at $50 per bag out of which some amount goes to the development and education of the small children in that slum area.

Recycled dresses by Gary Harvey

Nowadays, the fashion industry is moving towards the trend of sustainable, elegant and at the same time reused and recycled clothing. This is what we call ‘green’ fashion which is on a high demand nowadays. Eco designers like Gary Harvey are into experimenting with clothes on the basis of their recyclability and reconstructing new designs out of the old garment pieces. This idea brings life to the old garments that were to be thrown or dumped into the garbage, be it the old discarded jeans or the old army jackets. Many creations, like the ‘Military Dress’ is made out of the 28 army jackets and the ‘Hawaiian Shirt Dress’ made out of the 7 Hawaiian floral printed shirts with mixed colors on it.

Recycled plastic bags basket

Converting trash into treasure can be very well learnt from the California-based artist who got the idea of making stunning baskets out of the old plastic bags. Also, decorations can be made on the bags out of the seeds of sunflowers. Measurement of this bag is nearly 4 inches deep and 13 inches across and most of all it is made with the use of coil method. This would increase the beauty and elegancy of the place where it is kept, be it the coffee table or the dinner table.

3d tic tac toe

Bringing in the concept of eco friendly board games was an idea brought to us by Peter Toomey, who had also invented the “GoGreenGames” concept. There are eco friendly classic games offered like checkers, horseshoes and Jenga which are made of plastic bags and recycled wood. The designer had come up with the idea of making use of the leftover composite deck boards and also the plastic bags. This made him come up with board games’ collection called “GoGreenGames”.

Give Plastic the Boot

The eco concept put into this idea is the creation of structures from recycled plastic bottles. This concept would attract us twice before we tend to throw away the plastic bottle after use. Making designs out of plastic bottles has come up as an idea in several minds, one of them being an American eco artist named Tim Gaudreau who created a monster shoe that too out of 3000 plastic bottles. This was made possible by the technique of hot gluing, joining all the bottles together. Although the pessimistic side of this idea would be that the design might not last long, and keeping it intact from external accidents would take a lot of efforts, or would be nearly impossible.

Composite deck

Imagine a deck made of recycled plastic bags, recycled soda bottles and mixed with sawdust! It would rather turn out to beat the ordinary deck that we use. Also, the plastic deck can stay cooler comparatively. This is available in variety of colors and designs.

Chair from plastic shopping bags

After a deck made out of the plastic stuff, it would not be hard to believe that a chair can be made out of the same. This chair, which is named as Inkuku is a traditional name by the Africans, is also based on the same technique of making it as a deck. Inkuku is the amazing furniture made out of the plastic bags which are recyclable.

All in all it is always good to be environment friendly be it through the use of plastic bags to make carry bags of daily use, or the furniture from plastic garbage that also ensure sustainability. This also puts a very good example of creativity and imagination in front of the world and enacts as a revolution to transform the world into a ‘plastic free world’.
