A stadium that was once known as the Lansdowne Road Stadium has been given a new transformation in harmony with the local community and the environment. Aviva Stadium, as it is called now was officially opened on Friday. Designed by global architects Populous in collaboration Dublin‐based architects, Scott Tallon Walke, the new stadium incorporates green features like rainwater harvesting, maximizing natural light and utilizing waste heat from the generators.
The steel roof structure at Lansdowne Road weighs 150 kilograms per square meter and has a seating capacity of 50,000. Both the north and the south ends of the stadium have a dramatic dip to the roof and seating, letting ample of sunlight in. in order to save on power, the escalators are fitted with sensors that ensures they function only when people are standing on them. Rainwater is harvested from the roof, stored in tanks in the basement and used to irrigate the pitch, while waste heat from the generators is used to heat the water for the toilets.
