The University of Michigan Solar Car Team has geared up to walk away with the winning trophy at the American Solar Challenge this year. Although the competition will be held next week, the team has already broken records with its solar car during the testing. The “Infinium” clocked speeds of more than 100 mph for 30 seconds at Ford Motor Co.’s Michigan Proving Ground, achieving a top speed of 105 mph. Speed certainly would contribute in registering a win in the 1,100-mile cross-country time/distance rally event from Broken Arrow, Okla to Naperville.

Being the tenth vehicle built by the UM solar-car team, the Infinium is expected to be the best one until now. Once the solar car qualifies through the Formula Sun Grand Prix this week, it will hit the race track on June 20. Achieving such high speed has elevated the hopes of the team members to reach the finish line first. The Infinium has already bagged the third spot at the 2009 Global Green Challenge, while UM’s five vehicles have succeeded in winning the American Solar Challenge in the open class.
