Aircrafts are believed to be the biggest carbon emitters. But, now the world is looking towards eco-friendly alternatives to make future of air transport greener. Recently an F110 engine that powers the F-16 Fighting Falcon initiated performance testing at Arnold Engineering Development Center using fuel that is safer for our planet. The clean fuel used a 50/50 mixture of JP-8 conventional aviation fuel and a bio-fuel derived from the oil contained in the seed of the camelina plant.
According to AEDC this testing is said to be first dedicated, uninstalled engine tests conducted by the Air Force as well as the first engine tests conducted by the Air Force in a facility that can simulate altitude effects on the aircraft. Testing will simulate the overall engine conditions experienced in the full flight envelope and include ignition light-off, throttle transients, augmenter lights and sequencing along with screech and rumble monitoring. Alternative fuel can be seen as the future of Air Force.
