The designer

Growing up in southern Saskatchewan, Cory Barkman took a leap in 2006 when he opened his own studio in Calgary. Since then he has contributed a lot to the world of eco-friendly designs and further continues exploring his life as an artist. His knack of transforming lifeless wood pieces, waste materials into designs have earned him a place of high respect in the industry.

Green treasure

Cory’s designs can easily be called as a green treasure that one would love to own. His designs are highly sophisticated and unique in their own way. They have a certain rustic charm that you may not fail to notice. According to Cory, he derives ideas for his designs from ‘everywhere’. The low rise tables, high rise racks, old styled cases do convey this spirit behind his designs. He weaves a script and makes sure that his designs flow like a story in its complete form. Have a look at his work to understand it, I am sure you’d be too mesmerized to deny. Cory has used weathered hardwood in this furniture series. The furniture totally uses recycled materials, displays his unique touch of carving and finishing. These are ‘hand carved’ and doesn’t use anything artificial, this qualifies it as ‘eco-friendly furniture’. The designs show certain characteristics that are innate to Cory’s designs. They are durable and have graceful curves. Every minor aspect like a knot or even a crack adds to the design and isn’t used in a random way. Sometimes this feel is very Asian or neo-Gothic. It is an art that the designer himself confesses to be pulled towards. In these pieces besides intelligent use of wood every piece of metal used is equally appreciable.

The fab factor

Cory’s designs exude an inclination towards natural inspiration. The colours, the designs, the symmetry, everything indicates quite a lot of sources of inspiration including his roots. Though Cory has his base in Calgary now, yet he has spent a lot of time on his family’s Saskatchewan farm. He credits this time as one of the main force of inspiration that one can see in the raw appeal and hassle free structure of his furniture. The carving is such that it doesn’t give that over-embellished feel. Neither you’d have to spend a fortune taking care of these furniture. To some extent even the junk and abstract form inspired designs. Wood, steel and other materials that are often considered useless are thrown as a waste mainly by the builders have been used in his work to an extent. So, one starts doubting as
to what material can be considered to be a waste. All the materials are recycled creatively to create what can be termed as a few of the most unique designs of eco-friendly furniture. As for his design and variety, you’ll have to see the designs to believe.
