Greenpeace slams Barbie for environmentally unfriendly packaging

Greenpeace takes on Barbie

“Barbie, It’s over, I don’t date girls involved in deforestation” – this is precisely what Ken has said after he found out that Barbie packaging is made out of paper made from ancient rainforest trees in Indonesia! This is the new video of Ken dumping Barbie that is intended to bring down the doll’s manufacturer Mattel, an American company who are believed to be using packing material supplied from Asia Pulp and Paper (APP) that make paper by mowing down the precious rainforest trees in Indonesia. Greenpeace, an international voluntary organization for the cause of environment preservation, has launched this campaign against Mattel Inc. to stop them from using packaging material supplied by Asia Pulp and Paper (APP) and have displayed the banner of Ken dumping Barbie in front of Mattel’s Los Angeles office. They have also released a video to strengthen their campaign.

Forests cover 30 percent of the earth. However, with the current rate at which deforestation is carried out – we shall lose these forests within a span of 100 years. The adverse effects of deforestation are alarming and affect not just the countless species living in these forests but also would be responsible for altering the earth’s climatic condition with global warming and thus affecting our existence in every possible way.

Barbie is probably the most popular doll and is essentially a household name. American businesswomen Ruth Handler’s brainchild Barbie was born in 1959 and till date is conducting successful business across the globe adding billions to its revenue. Mattel, the manufacturer of these dolls, still continue to do great business with a consistent demand for Barbie dolls despite periodic criticisms regarding the doll’s skinny frame and the fact that it is giving rise to the obsession in young girls for achieving such an anorexic body type.

However, the recent allegations against Mattel for being a part of environment destruction could probably slow down its business and market value. Mattel has, however, in its official statement come out clearly that they have not signed any direct contract with APP and had also stopped their suppliers from procuring and raw packaging material from them. They have further stated that they are a responsible organization and do not support the deforestation and have ordered investigations into the matter..

Taking the fact even further, makes one realizes that its not just Barbie manufactures, but in fact other major contributors of toys including Disney who are in line. ‘Beware of using products from the pulp of those green trees from Indonesia’ is the voice from activist of Greenpeace.

There are ready made solutions to this issue. The availability of recycled paper and materials can take over this long-standing issue. Using these materials will not only save our ecological system, but also help gaining that extra mileage in good will in turn resulting in high sales. If this mantra is taken on by all companies irrespective of nation or production, our world can continue to be a beautiful and peaceful place to live in.
