My boyhood interest was in aviation. So maybe, it’s a missed career which I am trying to recreate or something.

Gabriel Nderitu, a 42-year-old father of two and an aviation fanatic, has been busy at his compound in Kahawa West for quite some time now. You could see him polishing his homemade aircraft for a test run in Kitengela next week. He is no engineer and has no background in aviation engineering. However, after researching for six-month extensively on internet, he is ready to pursue his boyhood dream.

He has imported some of the material required for his aircraft from the US. He has attached a 74-inch propeller to a Toyota NZE engine that turns out 4000 rpm. The completely detachable aircraft carries only two people and weighs 800 kg when fully assembled. Tail and wings are made of aluminum sheets. Gabriel says that the body will be complete when he fixes the windscreen and covers the nose.

Five men have been working since June 2009 during weekends at 1000 shillings a day to bring the basic aircraft into existence. Until date, Gabriel has spent more than 450,000 Kenyan Shillings on his ambitious project.
