A team of MIT students has developed a low-cost, portable ventilator for keeping patients breathing in places with no access to mechanical ventilators. A class project called Precision Machine Design, which involved creation of devices that could help ease modern hospitals problems, motivated students to create this product. The simple inexpensive device could be of immense help in emergency.

The $100 ventilator features a pump, which is encased in a plastic box with a battery, motor and controls. Three control knobs are there to adjust the total volume of air delivered in each breath, to calculate the number of breaths per second, and assessing the frequency of inhaling and exhaling. The device relies on a curved plastic cam for compression and release of air.
