Green undulating roofs are fast becoming a means to instill sustainability into design architecture. This particular aspect featured in the Two Seasons Hotel project by Julien de Smedt Architects helped it win the competition to build the grand structure. The nine-story apartment tower situated in the middle of Stavanger, Norway has been converted into a hotel on a pre-existing parking garage.
The hotel’s rising and falling roof makes the building sustainable. The roof dips dramatically toward the historic section of the town to rise equally forcefully on the other side. The eco-friendly green roof provides necessary insulation and also helps retain rainwater to meet the hotel’s water supply needs. The building’s open central courtyard allows natural ventilation with ample penetration of daylight, thereby reducing power consumption to maintain appropriate temperatures inside. The space under the 194-room hotel at the street level consists of shops, a restaurant and cafe, and the hotel lobby.
