Green farming is soon going to be a myth. Well, if you think that the natural pesticides you had been using were environmentally benign, you are circuitously disagreeing with a recent Canadian study conducted by the University of Guelph researchers, which says that the natural compounds present in organic pesticides leach into the ground and ultimately, disturb the water table. Moreover, as natural pesticides are always used in higher doses than the chemical pesticides, it adds to the mess negatively.
Rebecca Hallett, a professor at Guelph’s School of Environmental Science headed the five-member’s study team. Hallett and her colleagues studied compounds used to destroy soybean aphids. After comparing four synthetic compounds to a pair of natural pesticides, the team concluded that natural products were less effective against the aphids. So, more of them were needed for getting same result as the chemical pesticides.
