A team of 20 final year mechanical engineering students from the University of Central Lancashire aims to hit it big at the 2010 Formula Student competition, which is run by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. The team called Formula UCLan has created two vehicles for the event. The event, scheduled in July, will feature about 120 university teams vying for green supremacy at the Silverstone circuit.

Andy Garratt, Formula UCLan team leader, said:

With sustainability now such an important issue within today’s society, this class provides a perfect ground for us to investigate new technologies and reduce our carbon footprint within motorsport.

Anyhow, all the teams realize it well that the cars they produce should have very high performance in terms of its acceleration, braking, and handling qualities. After all, a low-cost car, which is easy to maintain and displays superior aesthetics, comfort and use of common parts is going to win the competition for sure.
