During his routine forages along the marshes, under bridges, and banks of the Cape Fear River, Shaw Lakey keeps collecting pieces of driftwood to transform them into some amazing sculptures. In his garage studio, the Carolina Beach artist works on reclaimed cypress, cedar, copper, bronze and stones to fashion mermaids, bodices, sea life and similar astounding abstracts.
Lakey has been creating his driftwood sculptures for almost a decade now. Aside from featuring his works at an annual show at the Gallery at Racine, in Wilmington, he also does commission work and never forgets to donate a sculpture to cancer charities twice a year.
