Solar-powered boats in Dalyan canals sail slickly, cause no erosion

solar powered boats used in dalyan

We never think about the erosion part while listing the environmentally friendly aspects of an eco-boat. However, a thoughtful soul – Özay Akdoğan from Dalyan, chewing on the frequently neglected aspect, launched a green project six years back that included a fleet of solar-powered boats. As these green boats do not create waves or ripples as they sail across Köyceğiz Lake and the Dalyan canals, there’s no erosion involved. Consequently, these don’t offer any threat to shore or plants as well.

Özay Akdoğan says…

The boats can sail for eight hours at a speed of six miles per hour thanks to the solar batteries attached. These boats do not have the waste oil, which pollutes our seas. Foreign tourists especially prefer these boats.

Inspires a mega-project:

Taking inspiration from Akdoğan’s project, the Muğla Governor’s Office and the Environmental Protection Agency for Special Areas (EPASA) have announced a 1.8-million-euro system to modify 600 boats that run on fossil fuel in the Dalyan canals. It’s a commendable move realizing that it will bring down gas exhaust and noise pollution in the region.
